Background
For this bathroom remodeling project in Reston, VA, the homeowners contacted us after discovering a leak from their shower that had seeped into the laundry room below. Unfortunately, a previous contractor had installed the shower, and the poor workmanship led to significant water damage.
After finding Northwood Construction through Washington Consumer Checkbook, the homeowners wanted to ensure the job was done right this time. They were cautious—understandably so—after their previous experience and were looking for a contractor they could trust to deliver lasting quality.
Beyond fixing the leak, their goal for this Reston bathroom remodeling project was to create a relaxing steam shower that could also double as a place to bathe their Golden Retriever, Scout.
Bathroom Remodeling in Reston, VA: Challenges and Strategies
Custom Vanity for Comfort
One of their top priorities was a vanity that suited their height. We worked with Bremtown Cabinets to build a custom vanity a few inches shorter than the standard 33″ height (including countertop), ensuring an ergonomic fit. The countertop is Caesarstone Moorland Fog, a durable and elegant choice that complements the serene spa design.
Designing a Steam Shower That Performs
The husband’s dream feature was a steam shower—a complex installation in any existing home. Fortunately, their house had open-web trusses, allowing us to run the necessary pipes cleanly. The steam generator is discreetly tucked inside the linen closet.
Creating a proper steam shower involves striking a balance between moisture control and ventilation. We angled the ceiling to direct condensation toward the drain. We fabricated a glass door with a pivot window above it, allowing for a tight seal during steam use and ventilation afterward. This design prevents mildew buildup while ensuring comfort.
Age-in-Place and Accessibility Features
The homeowners wanted to incorporate age-in-place design elements after witnessing mobility challenges with a loved one. We added wall blocking for future grab bars and installed a teak bench inside the shower. Even the corner shelf was customized—not for shampoo, but for a small Bluetooth speaker to complete the spa-like experience.
Reimagining the Bathroom Layout
The original Jacuzzi tub, rarely used, was replaced with a cozy dressing nook featuring extra storage and space for a chair. To improve flow, the swing door to the walk-in closet was replaced with a space-saving pocket door.
Storage was a key concern, so we expanded the linen closet shelves from 12” to 21” deep and added interior outlets for rechargeable devices—keeping the vanity clutter-free.
The flooring is a 12” x 24” porcelain tile—durable, low-maintenance, and comfortable for Scout to walk on. To complete the spa experience, we installed a Warmly Yours hard-wired towel warmer for everyday comfort.
The Results
This Reston bathroom remodel yielded a stunning, functional retreat that strikes a perfect balance between relaxation and practicality. The homeowners now enjoy the custom steam shower they’d always wanted—complete with thoughtful details for comfort, storage, and accessibility. And as a bonus, their Golden Retriever, Scout, gives it his full approval.
